 CONSIDINE: 'I HAVEN'T SOLD OUT'
« Thread Started on Mar 11, 2007, 11:46pm »

"...Rising British actor PADDY CONSIDINE has hit back at suggestions he has sold out after starring in upcoming Hollywood sequel THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM.
The DEAD MAN'S SHOES actor only worked alongside MATT DAMON on the blockbuster movie because he knew director PAUL GREENGRASS would take a low key approach to filming.
He explains, "I'm not going to go to Hollywood and do any kind of rubbish. I did the new Bourne film because it is being made by Paul Greengrass and I knew he wouldn't make it a big Hollywood experience.
"It was all shot like a fly on the wall so it felt very much like you were in an independent movie."..."

dam... looking forward to this film!

Brother Kezz! That piece is from the premiere of HOT FUZZ. I wouldn't mind but they didn't even ask the question "do you think you've sold out.." they actually asked me what the difference is between smaller movies and bigger productions like Bourne.

I was asked similar questions around the time of Cinderella Man. The fact that it says I ONLY worked alongside Matt Damon because of Paul is f*cking ludicrous! I'd work with the man any day of the week. He's one of the soundest fellas I've ever come across.

There's too much of this kind of f*cking tat out there for my liking. I'm also trying to figure out who made the suggestion that I'd sold out, because the f*cking wimp with the microphone certainly didn't ask me.

Truth is I've done big and small numbers and they are a total mixed bag, there's no formula for what makes a good movie. If I could bag a couple of mill to lead a wounded whale back to the sea, out of captivity then f*ck it! Count me in. I can develop my film projects then. In peace! So, contrary to what that tool put, I WOULD sell out!!!!!!

I think this 'selling out' attitude to journalism is exactly the rubbish that keeps British Cinema stuck behind The rest of the world.

Jonny Depp and the like can jump in and out of bed with Indie film and Hollywood Blockbusters or People like Brad Pitt can turn up in 'Snatch' and people sing their praises. Whats the deal with Brits turning on their own talent once they do well.

Has Helen Mirren sold out now then? Should she give her oscar back?

You can't even find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "Fuck you" right under your nose. Try it sometime.

These reporter/critic parasites like to f*cking label other people, usually borne out of a frustration with their own pathetically mundane existences. What annoys me is that they feel they have the right to make assumptions about folk, just because they’re in the public eye and again, due to the bitterness and resentment eats at them from the inside, love nothing more than pass judgment on those that have managed to make a success of their life.

Paddy, if I were in your position I would do the same, mate. The one for them, one for me mentality is definitely the key to success. You do the big gigs for the money and mainstream recognition, which in turn affords you the ability to do the projects you really want to do.

It’s unfortunate that we live in a country chock-full of people that want to see other people fail – It seems to validate their own miserable lives in some way. With the exception of Gareth’s site here and what Dave’s been doing over on the Shane site, the internet forums are bogged-down with people that subscribe to the same philosophy as these so-called writers; obsessed with slagging off films they’ve not seen and generally forming an opinion of celebrities based on what they’ve read in a shit-paper mag like HEAT.

If you want to be a successful actor you have to have a certain amount of ambition.

Many professional actors will make you believe they want to be the next Brando, De Niro or Pacino but really they would all love to be the next Tom Cruise or Harrison Ford.

It is every actors dream to be able to 'Open' a movie and see their name above the title and noone should be knocked for wanting that.

At the end of the day acting is a job and Paddy was offered a better job. A great role in a big Hollywood blockbuster what are you going to say No.

Its just like Ewan McGregor doing Star Wars. Can you imagine this phone call.

"Hello this is George Lucas here. Ewen I'd like you to Star in my Star Wars Prequels."

"Well Thank you very much Mr Lucas, but I can't accept the role as I would be selling out the British Film Industry. I'd love to do a Hollywood Blockbuster with you but I would much rather stay here and make low budget films for low wages for an industry that doesn't really care about its own productions."

And that's the way it should be! Ha ha. But fuck, Greengrass? Who wouldn't take that gig?

It's funny that Paddy has had this said about him, especially after working with Matt Damon. He may be a big name now, but him and his old mucker, (the reformed Bennifer) starved and f*cking struggled for SIX YEARS to get Good Will Hunting made. They were turned down by EVERYONET imaginable, and Harvey Weinstein kept them dangling for ages.

Even when there was an offer to take the picture out of their hands and cast Di Caprio and Brad Pitt in the Ben and Matt roles, the guys stuck with it, and didn't let it go.

And just like Paddy, after they tasted a little success (well - okay a LOT with the screenwriting Oscar), they came in for flak for selling out. But of course, Damon has kept it fresh, doing big and little films. From Bourne to Gerry, he's copped grief for doing films that were too big AND too small. But one thing I've figured out is that it's all about the script and the people involved.

So selling out is a cheap shot tagline used to typify actors and directors. Don't forget Doug Liman got hassle for going from Swingers to the original Bourne also. And yet here's a great franchise that pulls it's best talent FROM lo-fi fare. The aforementioned Liman, Greengrass (came from a blistering TV docu-drama of Bloody Sunday), Franka Potente (Run Lola, Run), Clive Owen (TV's Chancer, Croupier) and the one half of the original Jim'll Fixit dream, Matt Damon. So for Paddy to be involved, well, to me, it's just following in the vein of franchise. Taking raw talent from the quieter echeleons and exposing them on a broader canvas for the good of the project.

In my eyes, that's as close as you could get to a formula for making a great film. But it's not a guaranteed eh? Selling out? No. Just cashing in the dues you paid I reckon.

Tom.

But that'd lead to finger cramp. And what if he gets a role playing a boxer? He'd have to keep is finger in line with the rest of his fingers in a fist shape.

Also it's a bit rude. It would prevent him from landing his dream role, taking over from Steve Martin in 'Cheaper By The Dozen 5: The College Years'

..........all too often I hear this phrase in the Brittish press "Selling out" (especially NME, even though it has little to do with film) Its not selling out! Its called ambition and trying to do the best you can. I for one would love to see Paddy in blockbuster films, but only if HE decided it was right for HIM. Do you think the person that will serve you tomorrow in Sainsburys has sold out when in 5 years time he/she is running the store? No of course not. Paddy has ambition just like everyone else in the world and he can use it as he sees fit! Paddy, do what you want to do, you will never be a sell out to me.

It's funny how the 'journalist' wrote.. "Paddy Considine has hit back at suggestions that he has sold out."

There never were any such suggestions anywhere. It's obviously the sh*t stirring opinion of the writer who didn't have the balls to approach the subject.

Although, having said that, I believe that unless Paddy agrees to star in a film made by one of us, then he truly has sold out! ;)
